Pink California checkerbloom flowers grow wild at Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve. The plant is also known as checker mallow and wild hollyhock. The preserve is known for its wildflower displays in spring, but also for its spectacular views of the ocean, Santa Cruz mountains, and San Francisco Bay. It is managed by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, which was formed 40 years ago to protect and preserve open space, grasslands, forests, baylands, and farmlands from development.
